Malaysia: Asylum-seekers at risk in mass deportation of economic migrants

AI is concerned at the deportation of more than 500 Indonesians from four immigration detention camps in Malaysia on 26 March 1998. Those deported include individuals known to be at risk of human rights violations in the Aceh province, Sumatra. Other Acehnese are possibly at risk of imminent refoulement, following their arrests since 18 March. They include: Iquil Hyas Leube, Zahizi Tengku Ubaidullah, Musanna Tengku Abdul Wahab, Muhammad Diah Badai, Qader Hasan, Ishak Duad, Burhan Syamaun, Syrahrul Syamaun, Ali and Effendi. Conditions in the detention camps are also causing concern, especially as independent monitors, including UNHCR, continue to be denied access.
