Indonesia: the Indonesian government: Failing to live up to its promises

Since President Habibie came to power in May 1998, promising human rights reforms, the Indonesian government has consistently failed to live up to its commitments. This has been clear from its handling of recent demonstrations which have been marked by the use excessive force on the part of the security forces and the arbitrary arrests, killings and ill-treatment of political activists in the areas of Aceh, East Timor and Irian Jaya.
