Indonesia: Concerns and recommendations, Asia-Europe meeting, 3-4 April 1998, London

This document outlines AI’s concerns at the continuing serious human rights violations in Indonesia, which have increased since July 1996 with a crackdown on political opponents.The independent trade union leader, Muchtar Pakpahan, and the former Parliamentarian, Sri Bintang Pumungkas are both on trial. Violence has also been directed towards Chinese trades people. Unlawful killings of criminals by the police have escalated and counter insurgency operations in Aceh, North Sumatra and Irian Jaya have resulted in extrajudical arrests, “disppearances” and arbitrary arrests.
