India: Manipur: The silencing of youth

AI is concerned with the situation in Manipur in which the rights of children are routinely violated by the security forces. Fifteen-year-old Yumlembam Sanamacha “disappeared” after being arrested with two other juveniles by members of the Indian army on 12 February 1998. He was seen being tortured on the raodside shortly after his arrest. When investigations were made into his whereabouts the army denied he was in their custody but later admitted he had been arrested and had escaped. Since then the army has made several attempts to prevent a judicial inquiry into the “disappearance”.
