China: Summary of AI’s concerns

This document describes AI’s concerns about major human rights violations which continue in China. These violations include arbitrary detention, often prolonged and without trial, of large numbers of protesters and suspected opponents of the government. The documents also enumerates AI’s concerns about unfair political trials, torture and ill-treatment, extensive use of the death penalty for a wide range of offences, widespread religious intolerance. AI recommends a number of key steps the Chinese authorities need to take to make significant human rights improvements.
