Brazil: Indigenous leaders marked for death: The killing of Francisco de Assis Araújo

On 20 May 1998, Indigenous leader Francisco de Assis Araujo was extrajudicially executed. He had been receiving death threats since 1989 in consequence of his land claim campaigning activities, particularly on behalf of his own Indigenous group, the Xucuru. The official investigation of his death has already been halted, continuing the pattern of almost total impunity for those who commit human rights violations against Brazil’s Indigenous population
