South Korea: Amnesty International appeal: Prisoner of conscience: Kang Yong-ju

Kang Yong-ju, aged 36, a former medical student and student activist from Kwangju was arrested on 1 July 1985 by the Agency for National Security and Planning. He was allegedly beaten during interrogation and was later sentenced to life imprisonment under the National Security Law in 1986 after an unfair trial. This was later commuted to 20 years in 1993. He remains in prison and is considered a prisoner of conscience.
