Belarus: Without trace: Uncovering the fate of Belarus’ “Disappeared”

In Belarus during 1999-2000, leading members of the opposition and a television cameraman “disappeared”. Since “disappearing” there has been no trace of the former Minister of the Interior, Yury Zakharenko, the Deputy Chairman of the Belarusian parliament, Viktor Gonchar, and his companion, Anatoly Krasovsky, and the Russian Public Television cameraman, Dmitry Zavadsky. This short report documents both the apparent failure of the Belarusian authorities to investigate the “disappearances” and a series of allegations which arose in the period from November 2000 onwards linking high-level state officials with the “disappearances” of the missing men.
