Turkey: Constitutional amendments: Still a long way to go.

On 17 October 2001 a law, adopted by the Turkish Parliament amending 34 articles of the Constitution (Law No. 4709), entered into force. AI welcomes some aspects of the constitutional reform, but urges further constitutional amendments and the necessary law reforms in order to fully comply with international human rights standards. This report discusses some aspects of the constitutional amendments which relate to concerns in the mandate of Amnesty International: torture, fair trial issues, death penalty, freedom of expression and the situation of human rights defenders.
