Israel and the Occupied Territories: Mordechai Vanunu: Solitary confinement as cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment

Mordechai Vanunu, a former nuclear technician, aged 37, has been held in solitary confinement since his abduction and enforced return to Israel in October 1986. He is serving an 18-year sentence in Ashkelon Prison after having being convicted treason and aggravated espionage. He was accused of passing classified information on Israel’s nuclear program to a British newspaper in 1986. This paper gives information on the abduction and initial incommunicado detention of Mordechai Vanunu and on his trial which was conducted in camera. The conditions in which he is held are described and the health risks associated with long-term isolation are briefly discussed. A 4-page letter on the case from the Israeli Ministry of Justice is appended.
