Muhammad Saleh Husayn Natur, aged 41 years from Gaza City, was arrested on 26 June 1990 and later issued with a six month administrative detention order. This was renewed for a further six months, so that he is now being detained until 25 June 1991. Muhammad Natur apparently suffers from mental illness: the report of a psychiatric examination in January 1991 concluded that he showed symptoms which could be interpreted as being psychotic and that the effect of his continued detention could be irreversible. In the appeal hearing against this latest detention order the non-classified evidence alleged that the defendant’s release would be dangerous to the security of his lawyer. The appeal resulted in his being transferred to Ayelon (Ramleh) Prison, which has a psychiatric wing.
