Iran: Written statement to the 47th session of the United Nations Commission on Human Rights

AI’s concerns about abuses of human rights in Iran are stated here. They include mass executions after unfair trials, arbitrary arrests, detention of prisoners of conscience and torture. Specific instances cited include the detention of more than 20 people, some elderly or in poor health, in June 1990, apparently for supporting an open letter critical of the government and the continued detention of about 50 women from left wing political groups after summary trials, although in some cases the sentences have expired. Many of the women are believed to have sustained injuries resulting from torture. Torture and execution of people calling for greater autonomy for Kurdistan and Baluchistan has been reported. The execution of Rev. Hossein Soodmand is also noted.
