Ukraine: The death penalty: an update

Amnesty International’s concerns about the death penalty in Ukraine include the scale of its application; Ukraine is among the countries with the highest annual number of executions in the world. These concerns were echoed by the UN Human Rights Committee in July. Although the number is unknown, executions have taken place in 1995 according to relatives of those on death row. AI calls on the Ukrainian authorities to abolish the death penalty for all offences, impose a moratorium on executions, create an official commission on the death penalty, ensure that relatives of those sentenced to death are given information at each stage of the prisoner’s case and publish statistics on the use of the death penalty.
