Amnesty International (AI) and the International Commission of Jurists (ICJ) intervened at the European Court of Human Rights in the case Judges Mariusz Broda and Alina Bojara. They were vice-presidents of the Regional Court in Kielce, Poland, where they were serving a six-year term starting in 2014. Their mandate was terminated prematurely in 2018 by legislative changes that undermined the independence of the judiciary in Poland. AI and ICJ argue that it is essential for the protection of judicial independence that safeguards are in place to ensure fair proceedings in decisions affecting the career and security of tenure of presidents and vice presidents of courts.
