Greece: Imprisonment of conscientious objectors Christos Baglatzis, Giorgos Kontogiorgakis

Christos Baglatzis was sentenced to four year’s imprisonment on 26 January 1994 for refusing to perform military service. Giorgos Kontogiorgakis received the same sentence on 29 March 1994. As Jehovah’s Witnesses, both are opposed to any kind of military service. There are about 350 other conscientious objectors currently in prison in Greece; as far as AI is aware, all are Jehovah’s Witnesses. AI is calling for their immediate and unconditional release and for the introduction of a completely civilian service of non-punitive length for conscientious objectors.
