Further information on UA 80/95 (ASA 20/09/95, 28 March 1995) - "Disappearance"
INDIA Jaswinder Kaur (f), aged 17
Darshan Singh, her father
Amnesty International remains concerned for the safety of Jaswinder Kaur.
While the organization welcomes the release of her father, Darshan Singh, it
is concerned at reports that Jaswinder Kaur is being illegally detained in
a private residence in Ropar, Punjab.
It is reported that, unofficially, police have told her parents that she is
"safe and well" and being held in a private residence. The police had previously
denied in court that she had been arrested and that there were any charges
against her.
Amnesty International is concerned that she is being held in an attempt to
force the surrender of her husband, Surinder Singh. The organization regularly
receives reports that relatives of alleged members of armed opposition groups
are illegally detained or "disappear", some of whom are believed to have been
subsequently killed.
FURTHER RECOMMENDED ACTION: Please send telegrams/faxes/airmail letters in
English or in your own language:
- expressing concern at reports that Jaswinder Kaur is being illegally detained
without charge by police in a private residence;
- calling for her immediate release if she is not to be charged with a
recognizably criminal offence;
- urging the government to immediately order an independent and impartial
inquiry into her illegal detention and to bring those responsible to justice.
