Mexico: Fear for safety: Father Javier Avila

There is concern for the safety of Father Javier Avila, a Jesuit priest and human rights activist, who received an anonymous death threat on 6 July 1997. Father Javier Avila is the founder of the Comision de Solidardid y Defensa de los Derechos Humanos (COSYDDAHAC), a non-governmental human rights organization in the state of Chihuahua. Father Javier Avila is particularly well-known for his work in defence of the rights of the Tarahumara indigenous community. Amnesty International is calling on the authorities to take steps to guarantee his safety and to initiate a thorough investigation into the threats made against members of COSYDDHAC.
