Ecuador: Amnesty International’s human rights concerns in Ecuador

This report covers Amnesty International concerns about human rights in Ecuador both under the administration of former President Leon Febres Cordero and during the current administration. AI is gravely concerned that, under the former administration, independent and full investigations into numerous cases of “disappearance”, torture and possible extrajudical killings were never initiated. The present administration appears also to have failed to investigate thoroughly and independently allegations of human rights abuses under the former and present administrations – with the one exception of the case of the “disappeared” Restrepo Arismendi brothers. Outstanding cases which AI has raised with the Ecuadorean Government are referred to in this paper.
