Trade Unionists targetted for human rights violations

This paper consists of a feature article summarizing AI’s concerns about human rights violations against trade unionists. It includes reports of intimidation of trade unionists in Colombia, including the killing of Juan Alberto Garay, found dead on 24 October 1991; the imprisonment in China of Zhang Qiwang, accused of being a “key member” of the Autonomous Union of Shanghai Workers; the killing in the Philippines of union activist Edilberto Benson, his wife Haydee and 10-year-old daughter on 28 August 1991; the “disappearance” of Marcela Valdez de la Cruz, a Peruvian teacher and trade unionist reportedly detained by the army in May 1991; the “disappearance” of Moroccan trade unionist Houcine el Manouzi; and the detention in a “ghost house” of Sudanese Ali al-Mahi al-Sakhi.
