This paper presents Amnesty International’s concerns about reports that members of the minority Ahmadiyya community continue to be prosecuted solely for the peaceful exercise of their religious beliefs. Recent legislative changes have made it a criminal offence to practise and propagate the Ahmadi faith. The most recent measure makes it a capital offence to defile the name of the Prophet Mohammad: orthodox Muslims consider the Ahmadis’ reference to the Prophet as a defilement. Specific examples of abuses suffered by Ahmadis in 1990/91 are given. They include the arrest of Rana Karamatullah and other participants in a prayer meeting in Abbotabad in 1990 and the arrest and sentencing of others for preaching about the Ahmadi faith.
