Maldives: Ignoring human rights obligations: Submission to the UN Universal Periodic Review 22nd Session of the UPR Working Group, May 2015

This submission to the Universal Periodic Review reflects Amnesty International’s analysis of the most pressing human rights concerns in the Maldives. The Government has failed to ensure the impartiality of the Judicial Service Commission and also failed to defend the independence of the Human Rights Commission of the Maldives. The cruel punishment of flogging continues to be imposed by the courts and the authorities have also been promoting the death penalty as a punishment. The protection of the right to freedom of thought, conscience and religion has been progressively deteriorating in recent years.
