The People’s Republic of China: a new stage in the repression: prominent political detainees face trials for “counter-revolutionary” offences

Several prominent political activists, detained without charge for over a year for their part in the 1989 pro-democracy protests, were charged in November 1990 with “counter-revolutionary” offences. This paper examines these charges; it also assesses the likelihood of the accused receiving a fair trial. Profiles of the following prisoners are given: Wang Juntao, Chen Ziming, Wang Dan, Zhou Yongjun, Ren Wanding, Liu Xiaobo, Liu Suli, Lu Jiamin, Zheng Xuguang, Zhang Ming, Han Dongfang, Bao Zunxin, Chen Xiaoping and Li Nan.
