Alarmed by the increase of forced violent evictions, Amnesty International initiated research on human rights violations that occur in the context of agrarian disputes in Guatemala. This report describes human rights violations against peasants and rural workers including denial of access to justice; forced eviction and house demolition, assurance of adequate alternative accommodation or due process of law; excessive violence during evictions; and intimidation. These violations are committed with impunity and with the indifference and inaction of the authorities. The report concludes with a series of recommendations aimed at protecting and defending human rights in rural areas.
