South Africa: Nowhere to Shelter

Domestic violence remains a pervasive problem for women in South Africa. Laws have been passed to protect women’s right to be free from domestic violence. However, many women are still unable to access legal remedies or find a place of safety. The authorities have a responsibility to ensure that the police trained to understand their legal obligations. They must also give urgent attention to increasing rural women’s access to places of safety and social support.
