This document gives details of some 77 prisoners in Cote d’Ivoire, whom AI has adopted as prisoners of conscience. All were arrested following demonstrations in February 1992, which started peacefully but which were followed by rioting and damage to property. More than 250 people were arrested at first; most were released uncharged or acquitted but some are still held uncharged. The 77 people in question were convicted between February and April 1992, despite the reported lack of evidence to show that they personally had been involved in violence. The names of the 77 prisoners listed include: Laurent Gbagbo, leader of the opposition FPI; Rene Degni Segui, President of LIDHO, a human rights organization and Martial Ahipeaud, President of FESCI, a student federation.
