Burundi: Amnesty International calls on the UN Human Rights Council to continue scrutiny of situation in Burundi amid ongoing violations and lack of cooperation

Amnesty International thanks the Commission of Inquiry for their report and for highlighting the continuing human rights violations in Burundi. The adverse impact of the political crisis on economic and social rights in Burundi is deeply worrying. The Commission has documented how increased taxes are impoverishing the population, while people have been ill-treated when unwilling or unable to pay their ‘voluntary’ contribution to the 2020 elections. This is consistent with Amnesty International’s previous findings on the harassment of those who refused to contribute to the ruling party.
