SYRIA/LEBANONAhmad Hamad, medical doctor
Amnesty International has no further information concerning the whereabouts
of Ahmad Hamad, a Lebanese medical doctor and a member of the Lebanese Medical
Association, abducted on 18 or 19 June 1997 in Akkar, North Lebanon.
It is believed that Ahmad Hamad was arrested by members of the Syrian military
intelligence and initially held incommunicado at their headquarters in Halba,
North Lebanon. His arrest is thought to relate to his alleged membership of
an outlawed political party in Lebanon, the pro-Iraqi Ba’ath Party.
No further action by the UA network is necessary, however, as this case has
been transferred to the medical network for continued appeals. Thank you to
all those who sent appeals on this case. The network will be informed if any
new information arises concerning Ahmad Hamad.
