Uzbekistan: Babur Alikhanovich Shakirov
Babur Shakirov was arrested on 14 August 1992 in Tashkent. He is reported to be detained at the investigation-isolation prison of the National Security Service in Tashkent, charged with "calling for the overthrow of the present regime and for a civil war". This charge may relate to Article 54 of the criminal code, treason, which carries a possible death sentence. Unofficial sources claim that he has been arrested in connection with his non-violent activities in the opposition organization Milli Mejlis (National Council) which he helped to found. Babur Shakirov has served previous sentences in the former USSR on charges of treason and anti-Soviet activities and was adopted by AI in 1975. Other members of the political opposition have been questioned by the police.
