RUSSIAShirali NURMURADOV, writer from Turkmenistan
(______ __________ in cyrillic)
Shirali Nurmuradov has had the threat of extradition to Turkmenistan lifted,
at least temporarily. Although the criminal case against him in Russia for
illegal possession of narcotics remains open, he has been allowed to travel
to Sweden to take up the offer of six months' residence which was part of a
Swedish literary award made to him shortly before his arrest in September.
The Russian authorities reportedly acceded to requests that Shirali Nurmuradov
be allowed to travel to Sweden at this time on the grounds that he requires
medical treatment. Shirali Nurmuradov arrived in Sweden on 26 October.
No further action is required on behalf of Shirali Nurmuradov. Thank you to
all who responded to this Urgent Action appeal.
