TURKEY: Fikri I__k
Fikri I__k, who was detained in Istanbul on 2 August 1991, has been transferred
to a prison in Diyarbak_r to serve the remainder of his 8-year sentence handed
down in 1984. He was a prisoner of conscience in the early 1980s when he stood
trial for his membership of the Progressive Democratic Cultural Association
(DDKD), an organization which was legal before the military coup of 1980. The
trial lasted three and a half years and involved 775 defendants. Fikri I__k
was provisionally released while the trial continued and has since lived under
a different identity.
Fikri I__k was not ill-treated while in detention at Istanbul Police
Headquarters and no further action is required on his behalf by the UA network.
Amnesty International has appealed for his release as a prisoner of conscience.
We thank all UA participants for sending appeals.
