On 7 July 1994 Zafer Tuzun and Deniz Bayram were formally arrested and committed to prison. Mansur Daslik and Mehmet Kurt are still under interrogation at Princlik Gendarmerie Station. Their detention and that of Mehmet Askin has been acknowledged. It is not yet known how any of the five were treated in custody. Ismail Agaya remains "disappeared" and there is grave concern for his safety.

On 7 July 1994, Zafer Tüzün and Deniz Bayram were formally arrested and committed
to prison, after having been interrogated for one month at the Gendarmerie
Regimental Headquarters in Diyarbak_r. They had been detained on 8 June while
taking copies of the newspaper Özgür Ülke by bus from Diyarbak_r to Urfa.
Mansur Da_l_k and Mehmet Kurt are still under interrogation at Pirinçlik
Gendarmerie Station. Their detention has been acknowledged. Amnesty
International has been informed that on 16 June the period for further
interrogation was set for another 15 days. They had been detained on 10 June
while taking copies of the newspaper from Diyarbak_r to Urfa. It is expected
that they may be formally arrested or released within the next few days.
The detention of Mehmet A_k_n has also been acknowledged, but there is no further
information on his situation. It is not yet known how any of the five others
named above have been treated in custody.
Ismail A_aya remains "disappeared". He was reportedly attacked by three
assailants on 28 May in the Be_evler district of Batman. His attackers dragged
him into a side street and forced him into a car. He had started distributing
the newspaper only four or five days previously. Several distributors of the
newspaper have been killed and Amnesty International believes there is grave
concern for his Ismail A_aya's life.
FURTHER RECOMMENDED ACTION: Please send telegrams/telexes/faxes/express and
airmail letters
- expressing grave concern for the life of Ismail A_aya who "disappeared" after
being detained in Batman on 28 May 1994;
- urging that immediate steps be taken to establish his whereabouts;
- requesting to be informed of the result of such investigations.
