TURKEYHakan Güler, aged 24, sports teacher
Kadri Tursun, teacher
Köksal Gümü_, Deputy Director, Lice National Education Branch
On 2 January 1996, a spokesperson for ERNK, the National Liberation Front of
Kurdistan, the popular front established by the PKK (Kurdish Workers' Party),
replied to Amnesty International saying that if the three teachers, Hakan Güler,
Kadri Tursun and Köksal Gümü_ had indeed been abducted by armed PKK members,
it was an unauthorized action, and that urgent steps would be taken to secure
their release. The spokesperson for ERNK concluded his letter by promising
that they "would do [their] best to investigate this incident and inform Amnesty
International's members about the outcome as soon as possible".
In view of the fact that more than six weeks have elapsed since Hakan Güler,
Kadri Tursun and Köksal Gümü_ were abducted by armed members of the PKK and
the lack of information about the fate of the three men, Amnesty International
remains seriously concerned for their safety.
