Italy: The National Strategy for Roma Inclusion: a short-lived hope for Roma in Italy

Joint Public Statement issued by Amnesty International, Associazione 21 Luglio and European Roma Rights Centre on 26 February 2016, ahead of the four year anniversary of the adoption by the Italian government of the National Strategy for Inclusion of Roma, Sinti and Camminanti. Mid-way through the implementation of the Strategy, the organisations remain deeply concerned of the lack of progress achieved by the Italian authorities, particularly in the area of housing. Segregated camps, discrimination in access to housing and forced evictions remain a daily reality for Roma living in camps in Italy, in breach of the country’s international and regional human rights obligations.
The organizations are calling on the European Commission to use the legal instruments available, including infringement proceedings, to hold Italy accountable for the human rights violations of Roma in the area of housing.
