Opposition political activist and prisoner of conscience Jennifer Latheef was released on 16 August 2006. She had served 10 months of a 10-year prison sentence handed down on 18 October 2005. She was found guilty of “terrorism” after protesting against deaths in prison and political repression in the Maldives.
