Republic of Korea (South Korea): Pregnant woman denied medical care in prison

, رقم الوثيقة: ASA 25/012/1996

Amnesty International is calling for an independent inquiry into the case of a prisoner of conscience who was arrested on political charges in the later stages of pregnancy and was denied adequate medical care while in detention. Koh Ae-soon, aged 28, was arrested on 4 December 1995 on charges under the National Security Law. Despite being unwell, she was not examined by an obstetrician until 29 January 1996, 57 days after her arrest. She later had a still birth. She was conditionally released from prison on 31 January 1996, and Amnesty International is calling for all charges against her to be withdrawn.
