Five men arrested on 25 June 1997 with David Alex, the Second-in-Command of
the East Timorese National Liberation Army, Falintil, remain in custody. Amnesty
International is concerned that the whereabouts of two of the men remains unclear
and access for the other three men is restricted.
It is now believed that five men, not four, were taken into custody on 25 June.
The names of the five are unclear but it is believed that they are Jose Antonio
Belo, Guilherme dos Santos, Manuel, Gil da Costa and Cesario or Mario da Costa.
Three of the five have been moved to Dili. It is not clear whether they have
been granted access to their families or independent legal advice. The
whereabouts of the remaining two is still unclear and Amnesty International
is concerned that they are being held in incommunicado detention.
THE ABOVE IS ADDITIONAL INFORMATION FOR THE UA NETWORK. THOSE PARTICIPATING
IN THIS ACTION WHO HAVE NOT YET SENT APPEALS ARE REQUESTED TO DO SO AS RECOMMENDED
IN THE ORIGINAL UA, ie:
- seeking assurances that none of the five detainees will be subjected to
ill-treatment or torture and that they will be given immediate and continuing
access to medical care, to members of their families and to independent legal
- urging the authorities to clarify the whereabouts of the all five detainees.
