Indonesia : Prisoners of Conscience Action 2004 - Case Sheet: The Tempo trials
This case sheet expresses Amnesty International's concern that charges against three journalists are intended to limit their right to freedom of expression. If imprisoned they would be considered by Amnesty International to be prisoners of conscience. The document gives background information of the trial for criminal defamation and for "publishing an article that could cause unrest" of Bambang Harymurti, Iskandar Ali and Ahmad Taufik, all staff of Tempo magazine, one of Indonesia's most respected weekly news magazines. The prosecution has demanded that each be sentenced to two years' imprisonment.
