China: Wei Jingsheng held in secret for 16 months
Sixteen months after his arrest, Wei Jingsheng is still being held incommunicado at an undisclosed location and no charges against him have been made public. No reason has been given for his detention. Efforts by his family to question the legality of his detention have been unsuccessful. Wei Jingsheng is an outspoken critic of the Chinese government and a former long-term prisoner of conscience. Attempts to silence him have also led to the imprisonment of Tong Yi, his assistant. She is at present in Hewan Labour Camp in Wuhan, Hubei province. She has described in a letter long hours of enforced labour and beatings by other inmates, encouraged by guards. AI considers both Wei Jingsheng and Yong Ti to be prisoners of conscience who should be released immediatedly and unconditionally.
