Rufino Pablo Mendoza and Antonio Hernández de Los Santos, arrested without
warrant by police in Guerrerro State on 16 February 1997, were released in
early June. Their whereabouts had remained unknown until they arrived back
in their village after a two-day walk from where they were freed in the
neighbouring state of Oaxaca. Both remain concerned for their safety, having
allegedly been tortured during their detention and warned not to speak to anyone
about what happened to them. Amnesty International continues to monitor their
situation.
Alfonso Marnez López and Alfredo Rojas Santiago are still in detention. Local
human rights organizations have taken up their case and are providing legal
assistance.
Amnesty International continues to call for investigations into the human rights
violations reported in this case, but no further action by the UA Network is
requested at present. Many thanks to all who sent appeals.
