Brazil:Wolmer do Nascimento (Rio Coordinator, Movimento Nacional dos
Meninos e Meninas da Rua, National Street
Ana Teresa do Nascimento, aged 2 ) Children of Wolmer
Wolmer do Nascimento Filho, aged 3 ) do Nascimento
Wolmer do Nascimento, a worker with street children who had denounced death
squad killings of minors, had received death threats directed against his
children and had also been threatened in the street by a man with a gun.
As a result he had sent his children away from Duque de Caxias. Amnesty
International had appealed that he and his family should receive special police
On 21 November Brazil's Justice Minister ordered that Wolmer do Nascimento
receive 24-hour-a-day protection by the Federal Police. Neither he nor his
family has returned to live in Duque de Caxias. He continues his work on behalf
of street children from an office in Rio de Janeiro.
The street children's refuge that Wolmer do Nascimento directed in Duque
de Caxias continues to function on a precarious basis. After hearing about
the threats to his life, some of the children abandoned the refuge and are
now living on the streets of Rio de Janeiro.
As a result of international publicity, Wolmer do Nascimento is now known
throughout Brazil. He reports that more than 1,300 letters from Amnesty
International members concerned about his safety have arrived at his Rio office.
No further action is required at this time. Thanks to all who appealed
on behalf of Wolmer do Nascimento and his children.
