Brazil: Police violence and the 500th anniversary

This report gives a detailed account of the events that lead up to the violent break up by police of a group of protesters during the 500th anniversary celebrations. The police used tear gas, rubber bullets and baton charges to break up two marches, injuring 34 protestors and temporarily detaining over 140 others. Photographs and witnesses appear to bear out the claims of those who participated in the protest that the police action was unprovoked.
