South Korea: Appeal for the release of Lee Jang-hyong

AI is calling for the immediate and unconditional release of Lee Jang-hyong, a 61-year-old former Lieutenant and restaurant manager, who has been serving a life sentence under National Security Law since 1984. He was arrested in June 1984 and reportedly held incommunicado for 67 days, during which time he was allegedly tortured and force to confess to spying for North Korea. AI believes that he was convicted unfairly on the basis of a confession extracted by torture and is therefore a prisoner of conscience.
