Report 2004 - Guide for journalists

Published

The Report 2004 is a comprehensive document detailing human rights issues of concern to Amnesty International (AI) during the year 2003.

It reflects the activities we undertook during the year to promote human rights and to campaign against specific human rights abuses, plus an authoritative survey of the human rights situation in 155 countries and territories during 2003, reporting on areas of work prioritized by Amnesty International.

PREFACE / pages 1 - 23

Preface

Pages 1 - 2

The preface identifies some facts and figures about Amnesty International, a breakdown of the content of the report, how to find our reports on-line and abbreviations for treaties.

Message from the Secretary General

Pages 3 - 4

This was a year when the fight for global justice came under attack from both armed groups and governments using the "war on terror" to undermine previous advances in the human rights sphere. The message from the Secretary General identifies the need for the world to not only fight against global threats but to fight for global justice.

Building an international human rights agenda

Pages 5 - 23

During 2002 and 2003 we conducted an intensive and far-reaching analysis of human rights in the world. This analysis was the basis for the development of the organization’s strategic plan for the period 2004 - 2006.

This analysis is presented under the following headings:

Resisting abuses in the context of the "war on terror"

Defending human rights in armed conflict

Protecting the rights of human rights defenders

Reforming and strengthening the justice sector

Promoting abolition of the death penalty

Promoting economic, social and cultural rights

Ending violence against women

Upholding the rights of refugees and migrants

PART 1 / pages 28 - 308

The core of the Report is made up of entries on individual countries and territories, grouped alphabetically by region. At the start of each chapter will be a regional overview that identifies the main human rights trends within the region.

Each individual country entry begins with some basic information about the country during 2003. This is followed by a summary of the human rights situation in the country or territory, and describes AI's specific human rights concerns there including facts and figures and case studies. Reports that have been published and missions that have occurred during the year are listed at the end of country entries, and these reports are available on AI's website at http://web.amnesty.org/library/engindex
