URGENT ACTION

ACTIVISTS RELEASED, BUT FORBIDDEN TO TRAVEL

Two Qatari activists who had been detained without charge since 22 March were released on 18 April. The prosecutor’s office told the men there was no case against them, but the Interior Ministry later told both activists they were banned from leaving the country.

Muhammad Issa al-Baker and Mansour bin Rashed al-Matroushi were released on 18 April; they had been detained without charge for 28 days. They were not notified of any charges against them during this period and were informed by the State Security Prosecutor’s office that no prosecution would be brought against them.

Soon after their release, however, the two men received a text message from the Qatari Interior Ministry telling them that they were banned from leaving the country. They had specifically asked the prosecutor’s office if they could travel, since Mansour al-Matroushi needs to travel to Egypt to continue his education, and they were told that they could. They were given no reasons for the travel ban.

No further action is requested from the UA network. Many thanks to all who sent appeals. Amnesty International will continue to monitor their case closely and take action through other means where appropriate.
