URGENT ACTION PROMINENT HUMAN RIGHTS DEFENDER MISSING Lawyer and human rights defender Fabián Nsue Nguema has not been seen or heard from since 22 October, when he visited a client in Black Beach Prison in the Equatorial Guinea capital of Malabo. There are fears for his safety. Prominent lawyer and human rights defender Fabián Nsue Nguema is the legal representative of a man arrested on 16 October (or thereabouts) and held in Black Beach Prison. For about a week, Fabián Nsue Nguema had been trying to see his client in prison but was denied permission by the prison authorities.
On 22 October, the Inspector General of National Security contacted Fabián Nsue Nguema and told him he could visit his client in prison. At about 2pm, Fabián Nsue Nguema went to Black Beach Prison but was not granted immediate access to his client. Fabián Nsue Nguema’s wife contacted him at 3 pm to see where he was and he told her that he had not seen his client yet as he had to wait for the prison administrator. An hour later, he called his wife to say that the administrator had arrived. He has not been heard from since. His wife has attempted to call him several times but his telephone did not ring.
On 23 October, Fabián Nsue Nguema’s wife went to Black Beach Prison to make enquires and was told that her husband was not there, despite seeing his car at the prison. She then went to the investigative court (juzgado de instrucción) to denounce Fabián Nsue Nguema’s disappearance. Please write immediately in Spanish or your own language: ν Expressing concern for the safety of Fabián Nsue Nguema, who appears to have been subjected to an enforced disappearance; ν Calling on the authorities to release him immediately, if he has been detained, unless they charge him with a recognisable criminal offence, in which case they must reveal the place of his detention and grant him immediate access to his family and lawyer; ν Urging the authorities to carry out an investigation into the disappearance of Fabián Nsue Nguema as a matter of urgency and to bring those responsible to justice.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION Fabián Nsue Nguema is a prominent lawyer, human rights defenders and leading member of the political party People’s Union (Unión Popular), which monitors and frequently denounces human rights violations. Over the years, he has been a defence lawyer for political opponents and prisoners of conscience. He has been harassed and intimidated on many occasions and has been a prisoner of conscience. In April 2002 he was arrested as he was about to defend a group of political prisoners who were subsequently adopted as prisoners of conscience by Amnesty International. In July 2002, he was tried for defamation of President Obiang and sentenced to one year in prison.
In June 2005 Fabián Nsue Nguema was arbitrarily suspended from the Bar Association for alleged misconduct, which was not specified.
