The 81st International Labour Conference: Amnesty International’s concerns relevant to the Committee on Application of Standards

In this document AI presents some issues which may be relevant to the discussions of the Committee on Application of Standards during the 81st International Labour Conference in Geneva in June 1994. AI’s concerns relevant to ILO Conventions nos 87 (freedom of association) and 98 (collective bargaining) include arrest, killing, torture and “disappearance” of trade unnionists and those involved in labour disputes in many countries. Under Convention 107 (indigenous peoples), AI has concerns about violations in the Chittagong Hill Tracts in Bangladesh and against tribal peoples in Brazil. AI is concerned about discrimination on ethnic or religious grounds (ILO Convention 111) in countries such as Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and eastern European countries such as Romania.
