Gross human rights abuses in the Former Yugoslavia

This comprises an oral statement by AI to the Exceptional Session of the United Nations Commission on Human Rights, held 30 November – 1 December 1992. Representatives of AI returned from Bosnia on 30 November; they found evidence of killings and other abuses, which appeared to have escalated in August, September and October 1992. Up to 6,000 remain in prison camps, partly because they have nowhere to go. Although some camps have been visited by the ICRC, AI is concerned about reports of unacknowledged camps. AI fears that the conflict may spread to other areas, namely Sandzak and Kosovo (in Serbia) and Macedonia. AI deplores the forcible return by Croatia of Bosnian refugees and the failure of international initiatives to make any real impact on the situation.
