Romania: The alleged ill-treatment of Simion Lupescu, Madalin Mocanu, Adelina Matei and Victor Safta

Amnesty International is concerned about reports of ill-treatment by police of the above named people, members of Miscarea de Integrare Spirituala in Absolut (MISA, Movement for the Spiritual Integration in the Absolute), an organization of yoga followers. On 10 March 1997 the above MISA members were allegedly arbitrarily arrested and ill-treated by police. On 11 June 1996 Camelia Rosu and Carment Efta were allegedly ill-treated by police during a raid on a yoga class organized by MISA. There is concern that the police ill-treatment of the above people may have been motivated by their membership in MISA and their beliefs related to the practice of yoga.
