USA: Who are the Guantánamo detainees? Case sheet 17: Mohammed Al-Amin

Mohammed al-Amin, Mauritian national aged 23, is believed to have travelled to Saudi Arabia when he was a teenager to study the Qu’ran. He hoped to become a teacher. He was arrested in Pakistan on 11 September 2001. He was transferred to US custody, transported to Afghanistan and then Guantánamo Bay, Cuba. He remains in Guantánamo Bay, having never been charged with a criminal offence. Action is called for so that allegations of torture can be investigated, urging the closure of the detention facility at Guantánamo and for the detainees to be given full and trials or released.
