Nigeria: Further information: Death penalty

Three more people, all members of the Hausa ethnic group, have been sentenced to death in connection with religious riots in northern Nigeria in May 1992, bringing to at least 17 the number of death sentences passed by Special Tribunals. AI is concerned that trials by these tribunals are unfair, with defendants having no right of appeal to a higher court and some detainees being convicted on the basis of no evidence at all.
